MediaTek announced a collaboration with Starlink to deliver wireless emergency alert messages via satellite to conventional mobile devices. The demonstration at Mobile World Congress 2026 uses a device equipped with the MediaTek M90, described as the first 5G modem with integrated satellite connectivity. The system operates in the S-Band under Starlink’s Direct to Cell service, enabling reception of Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS), Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), and Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS) notifications in areas without terrestrial cellular coverage.

MediaTek stated that the service is already active for WEA in the United States, Canada, and Japan. The company reported that more than 4.4 million people have connected to Starlink Mobile during emergency situations.

JC Hsu, Corporate Senior Vice President at MediaTek and General Manager of the Wireless Communications Business Unit, said the partnership addresses cellular coverage gaps during natural disasters and other emergencies and advances standardized NR-NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) technology for commercial use.
