Apple introduced a new version of the AirTag item tracker. The updated AirTag features an expanded finding range, a louder speaker, and compatibility with Precision Finding on Apple Watch models.

The new AirTag uses Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the same one found in the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch Series 11. Precision Finding now guides users to lost items from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation, using haptic, visual, and audio feedback. An upgraded Bluetooth chip extends the overall range for locating items. For the first time, Precision Finding is available on Apple Watch Series 9 or later, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.

The speaker is 50 percent louder than in the previous model, allowing the AirTag to be heard from up to twice the distance. Combined with a new distinctive chime, this helps users locate items such as keys or wallets in challenging locations.

The AirTag continues to rely on the Find My network, a crowdsourced system of Apple devices that uses Bluetooth to detect and report the approximate location of accessories when out of direct range of the owner’s iPhone. The product is designed exclusively for tracking objects, not people or pets.

New security features include cross-platform alerts for unwanted tracking and frequently changing unique Bluetooth identifiers. Location data is not stored on the device, and all communication with the Find My network uses end-to-end encryption. Only the owner can access location information, and neither Apple nor any device that assists in locating an AirTag knows the identity or location of the helper device.

The new AirTag integrates with the Share Item Location feature in iOS. This allows users to temporarily and securely share an item’s location with trusted third parties, such as airlines, to assist in recovering lost luggage or other items. Apple has partnered with more than 50 airlines to accept Share Item Location links. Access is restricted to authorized personnel through secure authentication, and sharing can be stopped by the owner at any time, expires automatically after seven days, or ends when the item is recovered. According to SITA, carriers using Share Item Location have reported a 26 percent reduction in baggage delays and a 90 percent reduction in truly lost or unrecoverable luggage.

Environmentally, the new AirTag includes 85 percent recycled plastic in the enclosure, 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100 percent recycled gold plating in Apple-designed printed circuit boards. The packaging is 100 percent fiber-based and recyclable.

The new AirTag maintains the same form factor as the original and is fully compatible with existing AirTag accessories. The FineWoven Key Ring, made from 68 percent recycled content, is available in fox orange, midnight purple, navy, moss, and black.

Pricing remains unchanged: $29 (U.S.) for a single AirTag and $99 (U.S.) for a four-pack. Free personalized engraving is available on apple.com and in the Apple Store app. The FineWoven Key Ring is priced at $35 (U.S.).

The new AirTag is available to order today on apple.com and in the Apple Store app, and will be available at Apple Store locations later this week as well as at Apple Authorized Resellers.

It requires a compatible iPhone running iOS 26 or later, or iPad with iPadOS 26 or later, an Apple Account signed into iCloud, and Find My enabled. Precision Finding on Apple Watch requires Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, running watchOS 26.2.1.
