Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) has delivered 1 crore electricity smart meters across distribution companies (discoms) in India. The company stated it is the first in India, and possibly globally, to achieve this scale. AESL expects to deliver the next 1 crore smart meters in the coming financial year.
As an Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Provider (AMISP), AESL holds a mandate to install approximately 2.5 crore smart meters across five states. The company has maintained an installation rate of about 25,000 meters per day, described as the highest in the industry.
This milestone was reached ahead of AESL's previous guidance to hit 1 crore by March 31, 2026. The project began in 2024, completing the deployment in roughly 24 months.
AESL cited an integrated approach for the execution pace, including partnerships with Adani Esyasoft Smart Solutions for smart metering and IoT, AdaniConneX for local data hosting, and tier-I meter brands for supply chain management. Through the group's CSR initiatives, AESL has trained technicians for installations.
Kandarp Patel, Chief Executive Officer of Adani Energy Solutions, stated: “Reaching an installed base of 1 crore smart meters is a testament to our benchmarked execution excellence and deep engagement with distribution utilities and consumers. These smart meters are not just devices — these are catalysts for empowering consumers with real-time usage data, improving grid reliability, reducing losses, and enabling efficient energy management. We remain committed to playing a pivotal role in India’s digital energy transition.”
The smart meters provide real-time consumer insights, improve billing transparency, and support utility operations. They contribute to data for consumption tracking and grid modernization under the Government of India's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
Under RDSS, India targets replacing 25 crore conventional meters with smart meters to modernize power distribution, improve billing accuracy, enhance demand forecasting, reduce Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses, integrate renewable energy, and aid grid planning.
In a related development, Genus Power has also deployed 1 crore smart meters under RDSS across major discoms in nine states. The company has manufactured an additional 1.5 crore meters deployed through other AMISPs and utility partners, resulting in 2.5 crore Genus smart meters operational nationwide out of nearly 5.62 crore deployed across India. Genus has expanded manufacturing with a new facility at Kotputli, alongside existing plants in Jaipur, Haridwar, and Guwahati.
