RISC-V International and the RISE Project have partnered to support the Yocto Project. RISC-V International has upgraded its membership from Silver to Platinum, gaining governance participation at the board level, while the RISE Project will provide engineering support.
The Yocto Project, established in 2010, is a build system for customized Linux distributions, widely used for embedded Linux systems and serving as the foundation for projects like Automotive Grade Linux. Although RISC-V platforms have been unofficially supported through community contributions, this collaboration marks the first formal support for RISC-V in the Yocto Project.
The Yocto Project maintains a comprehensive build and test matrix covering various platforms, ensuring robust testing for embedded systems. This support enables RISC-V members developing embedded platforms to access verified tools for building Linux, aligning them with other hardware architectures. All RISC-V profiles, including RVA23, will be supported, with the Yocto Project offering a four-year Long Term Support (LTS) cycle. This facilitates features like Software Bill of Material (SBOM) generation and build reproducibility for device manufacturers.
The RISE Project, a collaboration of over 20 RISC-V member companies, contributes over €1 million to develop and maintain the RISC-V software ecosystem, spanning firmware, AI/ML applications, and Linux integration. This aligns with RISE’s mission to enhance software and tools across the RISC-V stack.
