Siemens to Buy Precision Innovations, Adding AI-Driven Chip Planning to Its EDA Lineup

Siemens has agreed to acquire Precision Innovations, a privately held electronic design automation (EDA) company, adding AI-driven chip planning tools to its EDA lineup. The idea is to help chipmakers optimize power, performance, and area, known in the industry as PPA, earlier in the system-on-chip design process, before teams commit to a specific architecture.

Precision Innovations builds its software on the open-source OpenROAD framework, and its tools are designed to help engineering teams quickly test whether a design approach is feasible, cut down on the number of design iterations needed, and get chips to market faster as SoC designs grow more complex. Once folded into Siemens, the company will become part of Siemens Digital Design Creation software line, sitting alongside its existing digital design and implementation tools to offer a more complete workflow that covers everything from initial architecture decisions through implementation and long-term silicon lifecycle management.

Ankur Gupta, executive vice president of the IC Portfolio at Siemens EDA, said the acquisition strengthens Siemens ability to support customers dealing with rising SoC complexity and the need to explore new architectures more quickly.
