onsemi and the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade have agreed not to proceed with a planned expansion of end-to-end silicon carbide (SiC) production at onsemi's Rožnov pod Radhoštěm site. The project was first announced in June 2024.

The decision reflects changes in the global SiC market and project economics since the original announcement. The company said it is not a reflection of the Czech Republic's investment environment, which remains important to its long-term manufacturing and growth strategy.

onsemi and Czech Ministry Agree Not to Proceed With Rožnov SiC Expansion

The June 2024 plan called for a multi-year brownfield investment of up to $2 billion. Existing silicon and SiC manufacturing at Rožnov will continue unchanged as part of onsemi's global manufacturing network. The company expects continued demand growth in automotive, industrial, AI data center and emerging applications, and anticipates ongoing investment and hiring at its Rožnov and Brno sites.

Karel Havlíček, first deputy prime minister and minister of industry and trade, said: “The decision by onsemi not to proceed with the production expansion project in Rožnov reflects the current situation in the global semiconductor market. What is important to us is that the company's existing production in Rožnov will continue unchanged. We value our long-standing cooperation with onsemi, as well as the fact that the company is developing its R&D activities in the Czech Republic alongside its manufacturing operations. I am pleased that the company is planning further investments in both Rožnov and Brno, which we can build on together,”
