Renesas has entered into a partnership with India’s Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) to support local startups and academic institutions in VLSI and embedded semiconductor systems. The collaboration includes two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the MeitY Chips to Startup (C2S) programme.

The first MOU focuses on aiding startups by providing Renesas development boards and Altium Designer software to enhance product engineering and support local manufacturing under the Make in India initiative. Additionally, 70 startups under MeitY’s Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme will benefit from this support. The second MOU targets academic institutions, offering microcontroller-based development boards, with each of over 250 institutions under the C2S programme receiving five reusable boards to enable product development. Institutions will also receive Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, PCB training, Altium Designer software, and access to the Altium 365 cloud platform to foster experiential learning and develop electronics engineers. The C2S programme involves over 250 academic institutions, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and private colleges, as well as 15 startups, to promote innovation in India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

Renesas also inaugurated expanded offices in Bengaluru and Noida to accommodate its growing R&D teams. The Bengaluru office, the company’s largest in India, houses 500 employees, including R&D engineers, business teams, and staff from recently acquired Altium and Part Analytics. It features design teams, test labs, and facilities to support product development. The Noida office integrates engineering and business teams to deliver high-performance compute solutions, particularly for the automotive market, with a focus on R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) solutions.

The MOU signing and Noida office inauguration were attended by Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology; Malini Narayanamoorthi, India Country Manager and VP at Renesas; and Rea Callendar from Altium, which partnered with Renesas in August 2024. Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata joined virtually. A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Vaishnaw and Narayanamoorthi at the Noida office.

India is a key market for Renesas, which aims to generate over 10 percent of its global revenue from the region by 2030. The company plans to increase its India headcount to 1,000 by the end of 2025. Recent initiatives include an OSAT factory project with CG Power and Stars Microelectronics in Gujarat and an MOU with IIT Hyderabad.

The C2S programme, launched in December 2021, seeks to strengthen India’s semiconductor and display manufacturing by training specialized manpower, creating reusable IP repositories, and designing application-oriented systems.
