Infineon Technologies has introduced the XDP8HD40S-1, a high-voltage hot-swap controller designed for digital power-path protection and monitoring in next-generation AI server power architectures operating at ±400 V and 800 V direct current (VDC). The announcement was made from Munich, Germany, on October 12, 2026. As AI clusters scale from 48 V toward higher rack power levels, reliable hot-swap functionality becomes increasingly important for uninterrupted operation. The XDP8HD40S-1 lets power modules, converters, GPUs, and server subsystems be connected and disconnected safely while preserving system integrity. It also extends Infineon's power semiconductor portfolio, which spans silicon, silicon carbide (SiC), and gallium nitride (GaN), further into the protection and monitoring layer needed for scalable AI infrastructure.
Magdalene Boebel, Senior Vice President and Business Line Head of Power System ICs at Infineon, said future AI data centers need power delivery systems that combine high efficiency, maximum reliability, and comprehensive protection. She added that the XDP8HD40S-1 allows designers to implement reliable hot-swap solutions for ±400 V and 800 V architectures, with the monitoring and protection features needed to maximize server uptime and operational efficiency.
The controller targets a range of high-voltage applications, including two-wire 800 V or ±400 V intermediate bus converters and GPUs, 1,500 V intermediate bus converter systems, high-voltage rack and server power delivery, battery backup systems, peak shaving, and 400 V to 800 V single- or dual-side hot-swap implementations. It is compatible with Infineon's OptiMOS MOSFETs and CoolSiC JFETs, so designers can build efficient, rugged protection stages with the same technologies Infineon has already used in its 800 VDC AI data center reference designs.
Operating at higher voltages makes it harder to control inrush current and protect infrastructure from transient events. To address this, the XDP8HD40S-1 integrates digital Safe Operating Area (SOA) control with programmable and preconfigured active protections. A variable pulse SOA control mode, called Boost Mode, supports optimized startup behavior while keeping the power switch within safe operation. An integrated gate driver supports external SiC cascode implementations based on a MOSFET and JFET combination, enabling efficient control of high-voltage power stages. For added robustness, the controller includes surge immunity protection and supports fast power-switch shutdown with a configurable 1.5 A pull-down current, helping protect AI compute infrastructure during abnormal conditions.
The device supports a broad operating range, with VDDB from 4.5 V to 24 V and VDDA from 4.5 V to 13.2 V, allowing integration into many server and rack-level power systems. For system management and remote diagnostics, it includes a PMBus 1.5 interface with enhanced security features for data center management infrastructure, and a built-in black-box recording feature captures critical event information to speed up fault analysis and debugging. Additional protection features include programmable input and output overvoltage and undervoltage protection, external temperature sensor support, and overtemperature protection.
Because modern AI server platforms increasingly need real-time visibility into power consumption and system health, the controller uses 12-bit current and voltage analog-to-digital converters. These provide measurement accuracies of about 1 percent for voltage, 1 percent for current, and 3 percent for power, with analog power monitoring accuracy of 1.5 percent and integrated energy metering for continuous monitoring. These capabilities support system optimization, predictive maintenance, and power management in high-density AI computing platforms, and they complement the reference designs Infineon has already demonstrated for 800 V-to-48 V and direct-conversion architectures as AI data center rack power continues to rise.
The XDP8HD40S-1 comes in an LFDSO-40 package measuring 10.7 mm × 10.3 mm, and samples are targeted for availability in the second quarter of 202
