Powercast has announced the customization of its innovative RFID-powered, wire-and-battery-free sensor condition monitoring system for data centers. This technology, currently in beta testing at Asset Vue, has been named a finalist in the RFID Journal 2025 Best New Product Awards.

Powercast’s RFID sensor tags, known for their maintenance-free operation, have been tailored to meet the specific needs of data centers. These tags, which measure just 2.75" x 1.75" x 0.25", facilitate airflow to keep equipment on metal server racks cool while providing precise monitoring of temperature and humidity. The tags are powered perpetually by RF signals from industry-standard RAIN RFID readers, eliminating the need for wires or batteries.

“Asset Vue required an affordable, maintenance-free asset monitoring system that didn’t rely on hardwiring or battery maintenance,” said Charles Greene, Ph.D., COO and CTO of Powercast. “Our technology met these needs, and we customized it further to ensure optimal performance in data center environments.”

Key customizations include reducing the size of the RFID tags to enhance airflow and redesigning the RF receiving antenna to minimize interference from metal server racks. These enhancements ensure reliable monitoring of mission-critical equipment and easy location of tagged items on crowded racks.
