Keysight, NTT and Lumentum have achieved a groundbreaking milestone in data transmission technology. At the OFC 2025, the three companies jointly demonstrated a record-setting 448 Gbps data transmission using 224 GBaud PAM4 optical technology. This pioneering achievement is set to transform AI and ML applications by enabling ultra-fast, power-efficient data processing in next-generation data centers.
The demonstration at OFC 2025 marks a significant leap forward in addressing the escalating bandwidth demands of AI and ML applications. By achieving 448 Gbps transmission speeds, the collaboration paves the way for the development of 3.2 terabit interfaces, optimized for the high-speed, real-time data processing required by AI and ML models. This breakthrough promises to enhance data center efficiency, reduce operational costs, and minimize environmental impact.
The successful demonstration utilized two Keysight M8199B Arbitrary Waveform Generators, NTT’s advanced frequency-domain interleaver, and Lumentum’s indium phosphide externally-modulated laser . This combination showcased the potential for high-speed, power-efficient optical interconnects, setting new standards for the industry.
Applications beyond 128 GBaud demand a new class of generators that provide high speed, precision, and flexibility simultaneously. Keysight addressed these challenges with the M8199B Arbitrary Waveform Generator, which offers a high-performing signal source for arbitrary signals with a sampling rate up to 256 GSa/s and analog bandwidth exceeding 80 GHz.
Dr. Akimasa Kaneko, Executive Vice President of Photonic Component Business Group at NTT , stated, “We see this collaboration as an important step in evolving next-generation high-speed optical communications and AI infrastructure. We are confident that this will help further develop the industry.”
Dr. Matthew Sysak, Chief Technology Officer, Cloud and Networking Platform at Lumentum, added, “Achieving 448 Gbps transmission is a significant milestone in advancing optical interconnects for AI-driven cloud infrastructure. Our high-performance externally modulated lasers will be instrumental in enabling faster, more efficient, and scalable data center networks.”
Dr. Joachim Peerlings, Vice President of Network and Data Center Solutions at Keysight Technologies, commented, “This collaboration showcases the cutting-edge advancements in high-speed optical communication and highlights the combined strengths of Keysight, NTT Innovative Devices, and Lumentum. This demo is another milestone for Keysight in advancing AI infrastructure, laying the foundation for future generations to innovate in new and transformative ways.”
