Semtech launched the industry’s first ITU-compliant asymmetric 50G PON OLT chipset. The GN7161, GN7153BW, and GN25L80B chipset facilitates the creation of compact, power-efficient SFP-DD modules that support GPON, XGSPON, and HS-PON standards, paving the way for the global rollout of 50G PON technology.
The chipset addresses key barriers in the fiber broadband market, where rising bandwidth needs from AI applications, cloud gaming, and remote work have strained existing networks. Unlike earlier 50G OLT prototypes, which struggled with high power use and non-compliance, Semtech says its solution leverages mixed signal equalization and integration to cut power consumption and enable a smaller form factor. This meets the size, heat, and density demands of scalable network upgrades.

“Carriers can now confidently plan network enhancements and deliver new services,” said Jacqui Adams, senior product line manager at Semtech. The chipset is available in samples and production volumes to qualified customers.
