Bourns has introduced the UALH Series of aluminum housed high power wirewound resistors, designed for industrial equipment that operates under demanding electrical and thermal conditions. The fixed resistors are rated at 100 W when mounted to a heatsink and 30 W without one, both at 25 °C, and cover a resistance range of 0.5 Ω to 22 kΩ with a ±5 % tolerance.

Industrial motor controls, power supplies, and high-power machinery can expose resistive components to high temperatures and electrical stress, so designers must weigh power dissipation, working voltage, and available mounting space when choosing a fixed resistor. The UALH Series addresses this with wirewound construction protected by a silicone molding compound, housed in aluminum that carries heat away from the resistor when it is attached to a heatsink. The thin, lightweight body operates across a temperature range of -55 °C to +275 °C, making it suitable for equipment exposed to both elevated and low temperatures.

Walter Garcia, Product Line Manager at Bourns, said that industrial power equipment designers need to manage heat dissipation while keeping the resistance and voltage characteristics their circuits require. He noted that the UALH Series offers a 100 W heatsink-mounted rating, resistance values from 0.5 Ω to 22 kΩ, and operation up to +275 °C in an aluminum-housed wirewound design.

The series is also RoHS compliant and halogen free, helping designers meet applicable materials compliance requirements.

The UALH Series is aimed at a range of industrial applications where resistors face high power and demanding thermal conditions. In industrial motor controls, it suits circuits that need high-power resistance along with reliable operation across a wide temperature range. In industrial power supplies, it is intended for power-control and dissipation functions that call for heatsink-mounted operation. It is also suited to high-power machinery that requires an aluminum-housed fixed wirewound resistor.
