900 V TinySwitch-5 powers robust offline power supply solutions

Power Integrations has expanded its TinySwitch-5 switcher IC family with a new 900 V switch option, giving designers greater voltage margin and stronger surge withstand capability. The 900 V devices are well suited for appliances, utility metering, smart grid, industrial, and other demanding offline power supply applications worldwide.

The TinySwitch-5 family combines the controller, driver, sense circuits, and power switch into a single IC, simplifying power supply design while achieving over 90% efficiency across the load range. These ICs draw less than 30 mW under no-load conditions and support designs capable of delivering more than 200 mW output from a 300 mW input. With switching frequencies up to 150 kHz, the family enables smaller transformer sizes, while features like frequency jitter for EMI reduction, adjustable switching frequency, integrated soft-start, and lossless primary current sensing help simplify design and cut down on external components.

TinySwitch-5 also offers a comprehensive set of protection features, including input undervoltage detection, input overvoltage shutdown, output overvoltage protection, overload protection, short-circuit protection, accurate overtemperature shutdown with wide hysteresis and auto-recovery, and auto-restart functionality that limits power delivery during fault conditions.

Power Integrations' latest reference design report, RDR-1099, showcases a practical offline power supply design that serves as a starting point for appliance, metering, and industrial applications requiring enhanced surge robustness and voltage margin.
