Semtech has expanded its LoRa Plus family of chips with two new transceivers, the LR2022 and LR2012, both now available in production. Together with the previously released LR2021, this brings the LoRa Plus portfolio to three production-ready transceivers, covering a broad range of IoT applications, from sub-GHz deployments to multi-band global tracking devices that use satellite connectivity.
Both new chips share the same fourth-generation LoRa IP core used in the LR2021, offering backward compatibility with LoRaWAN, LR-FHSS (a frequency-hopping variant of LoRa designed for satellite use), and legacy OOK devices, an older, simpler wireless modulation method. The chips offer strong radio sensitivity along with extended data rates, up to 125 Kbps for LoRa and 2 Mbps for FSK-based applications. That throughput allows for fast, high-speed bursts of data while still keeping power consumption low, supporting larger file transfers such as images, audio, and firmware-update-over-the-air (FUOTA) updates. The chips also support use cases that require very low latency in proprietary wireless protocols.
Rich Sanders, president of Zenner USA, said the company chose Semtech's LR2012 LoRa Plus transceiver for its Stealth Reader Meter Interface Unit, used in automatic meter reading and infrastructure systems, because of its strong LoRaWAN performance, backward compatibility with legacy OOK devices, and support for LR-FHSS, which enables scalable satellite connectivity.
Tobias Knop, team leader of firmware development at Engelmann Sensor GmbH, said the company wanted a LoRaWAN platform for its next-generation metering solutions that could fully take advantage of the latest LoRa technology, and that Semtech's LR2012 delivers that at the right price point, making it the right choice to power the company's product roadmap.
Shahar Feldman, senior product marketing director of wireless ICs at Semtech, said that with the LR2022 and LR2012 now in production, there's a LoRa Plus chip suited to a wide range of IoT applications, from sub-GHz sensor nodes to global multi-band trackers with satellite connectivity to edge AI devices that need to support multiple wireless protocols. He noted that all three devices share the same fourth-generation LoRa IP platform and Unified Software Platform, backed by a global ecosystem of more than 500 million already-deployed LoRa devices.
Semtech's full wireless IC lineup now includes the LR2021, a multi-band, multi-protocol transceiver supporting FLRC at up to 2.6 Mbps for edge AI applications; the LR2022, a multi-band transceiver built on a single hardware design that supports both terrestrial and non-terrestrial (satellite) networks; and the LR2012, a sub-GHz transceiver optimized for traditional low-power wireless and LPWAN (low-power wide-area network) applications.
Industry partners and customers will be able to see the full LoRa Plus portfolio at several upcoming events, including IoTE 2026 in Shenzhen, China, from August 26-28, home to the LoRa Global Ecosystem Forum; Electronica India in Bengaluru from September 17-19; and The Things Conference in Amsterdam from September 25-26, a major event for the LoRaWAN developer community.
