Hi, this is Srinivas, Editor-in-Chief of EEHerald, bringing you a special edition of the podcast covering Electronica India and Semicon India, which concluded in September 2026. Both events focused strongly on India’s growth story as well as current global trends. They took place more or less in the same week, and while closely related, they had distinct focuses: Electronica India concentrated on electronics, while Semicon India centered on semiconductors.

Electronica India covered the full electronics manufacturing ecosystem—from materials and components to devices, systems, and manufacturing equipment such as reflow ovens—along with everything from semiconductor ICs to passive components, all under one roof. Semicon India, by contrast, addressed the semiconductor manufacturing value chain, from materials (chemicals and gases) and equipment to foundries and chip packaging trends. It also highlighted supporting engineering disciplines essential to semiconductor manufacturing, including materials engineering, civil engineering, and chemicals and gases.

Both events drew large audiences. Electronica India attracted thousands of attendees and hundreds of stalls. Semicon India likewise saw strong attendance and a record number of booths.

Turning to growth and challenges: the Indian semiconductor market is projected to expand from $64 billion in 2025 to $200 billion by 2035—a massive increase. Electronic manufacturing is also expected to grow into a market worth hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming years. Amid this growth, significant challenges remain. India still imports nearly every component in the advanced sector. While it produces some passive and low-end components, these fall short of industry requirements. The Electronic Component Manufacturing Scheme has helped address this gap, approving 106 projects worth over ₹69,000 crore. These projects should support greater self-sufficiency within two to three years and reduce import dependence for both electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. Parallel programs are also advancing local technology and intellectual property.

A standout development at Semicon India involved Tata Electronics, which is building both a fab and a large OSAT facility in Assam. Construction is actively underway. The fab is expected to begin producing chips in the 110 nm to 28 nm range around 2028, starting with larger nodes before moving to deeper ones such as 28 nm. The OSAT facility is anticipated to start production sooner—possibly within months or a year—though official announcements are still pending. OSAT is expected to ramp up faster than the fab.
