Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s first Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility for Mobile Devices in Noida On August 30, 2025. The Minister stated that the facility marks a significant step in the Make in India initiative, emphasizing that India aims to manufacture all mobile phone components, including chips, cover glasses, and laptop and server parts. He announced that a Made in India chip is expected to be introduced soon, advancing the country’s goal of self-reliance in electronics. Vaishnaw highlighted that India’s electronics manufacturing has grown sixfold over the past 11 years, reaching a production value of ₹11.5 lakh crore, with exports exceeding ₹3 lakh crore and employment for 2.5 million people. He also noted that India’s GDP grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of FY 2025-26, reflecting a stable and innovation-driven economy.

Pankaj Mahindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular & Electronics Association, emphasized the labor-intensive nature of tempered glass manufacturing, noting its potential to create jobs, support MSMEs, and position India as a global hub for electronics accessories. The domestic market for tempered glass is estimated at over 500 million pieces, with a retail value of approximately ₹20,000 crore, while the global market exceeds USD 60 billion.
The Noida facility, built with an initial investment of ₹70 crore, has a phase 1 capacity of 25 million units annually, employing over 600 people. Phase 2 will expand capacity to 200 million units with an additional ₹800 crore investment, creating over 4,500 jobs. The facility features advanced manufacturing processes, including scribing, shaping, polishing, chemical tempering, coating, printing, and lamination, with strict quality inspections to ensure standardized products.
