On March 31, 2025, CML Micro announced the expansion of its SµRF product portfolio with the launch of two new Gallium Arsenide (GaAs)-based power amplifiers, the CMX90A007 and CMX90A009, designed for integration into portable radio communication systems. These single- and two-stage amplifiers target dual-cell lithium battery-powered wireless devices, addressing a range of applications.
The CMX90A007 is a two-stage Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (InGaP/GaAs HBT) amplifier with high gain, functioning as either a standalone final-stage power amplifier or a driver for the CMX90A009. The CMX90A009 is a single-stage GaAs HBT power amplifier optimized for thermal performance, intended as the output stage in high-power amplifier transmit chains. Both devices operate across a frequency range of 136 to 1,000 MHz, covering applications such as two-way radios, critical communications handsets, private and land-mobile radios (PMR and LMR), and wireless data modem networks.

Packaged in QFN and DFN formats, the amplifiers are designed for thermal efficiency and integration into space-constrained PCBs. They feature off-chip matching, allowing designers to customize performance for specific applications using dual-cell lithium battery technology. The CMX90A007 delivers an output power of +33.5 dBm (2.2W) with over 55% efficiency at 435 MHz and 7.4V, while the CMX90A009 provides +40.0 dBm (10W) with over 60% efficiency at the same frequency and voltage.
Both amplifiers support a supply voltage range of 6.0V to 9.5V, enabling direct operation from a dual-cell lithium battery without a voltage regulator. They also include an integrated active bias circuit for temperature compensation, simplifying the design process for developers of portable communication devices.
Rob Smith, Product Line Director at CML Micro, noted that the market has faced challenges due to obsolescence of power amplifiers operating around 7.5V, creating supply chain issues for organizations like two-way radio manufacturers. The new amplifiers aim to address these issues with integrated GaAs technology designed to work together.
The CMX90A007 and CMX90A009 are now available in Asia, Europe, and the US, supported by comprehensive data sheets and CML Micro’s global sales and applications teams. The products and evaluation boards can be purchased through distributors such as DigiKey, Mouser, and RFMW. Additional details are available on the product pages for the CMX90A007 2W 136 – 1000 MHz 2-stage Driver Amplifier and the CMX90A009 10W 136 – 1000 MHz Power Amplifier.
