Sony Semiconductor and TSMC have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to establish a strategic partnership focused on the development and manufacturing of next-generation image sensors.
The agreement outlines plans to create a joint venture in which Sony will hold majority and controlling ownership. The JV would establish development and production lines at Sony’s newly constructed fabrication facility in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The partnership intends to combine Sony’s capabilities in sensor design with TSMC’s process technology and manufacturing operations.
Under the MOU, the companies are discussing potential investments through the joint venture. These would occur alongside Sony’s planned new capital investment in its existing plant in Nagasaki. Both sets of investments would be implemented in phases depending on market demand and are being considered with expected support from the Japanese government.
The partnership will also examine opportunities in physical AI applications, including automotive and robotics sectors. The formation of the joint venture remains subject to the negotiation and execution of a definitive legally binding agreement, as well as the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.
