India’s Surging Memory Semiconductor Demand: A Golden Opportunity for South Korea’s Samsung and SK Hynix?

As India’s digital economy and AI ambitions accelerate, its appetite for memory semiconductors such as DRAM, NAND flash, and especially high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for data centers and AI workloads is exploding. Industry observers note that the country’s projected memory demand growth could effectively absorb the annual output of an entire dedicated memory fab, creating a compelling strategic opening for South Korea’s dominant memory chipmakers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, who are already deepening ties with India through high-level government and corporate engagements.

This momentum aligns perfectly with South Korea’s recent state visit by President Lee Jae-myung, during which India and South Korea launched the “India-Korea Digital Bridge” – a landmark framework to boost cooperation in AI, semiconductors, and IT. The two nations also set an ambitious target to double bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030 (from the current ~$27 billion) and signed MoUs on advanced technologies, including semiconductors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Lee witnessed these developments firsthand, underscoring a shared vision for supply-chain resilience in critical sectors.
