Karnataka government is advancing its efforts to establish the state as a global hub for semiconductors, electronics, and advanced manufacturing during Minister M B Patil’s ongoing visit to Japan. The delegation, which includes senior officials such as Selvakumar S, Principal Secretary, Department of Commerce and Industries, and Gunjan Krishna, Commissioner for Industrial Development and Director, Department of Industries and Commerce, held strategic meetings with key Japanese companies to attract new investments.
The discussions focused on leveraging Karnataka’s recent policy initiatives, renewable energy infrastructure and state’s semiconductor initiatives. These measures align with India’s broader goal of achieving exponential growth of electronics and chip manufacturing sector in India.
Tokyo Electron confirmed the establishment of a development base in Bengaluru. The company sees Karnataka’s semiconductor ecosystem and skilled talent pool as a foundation for future growth, with both sides agreeing to maintain close engagement for further collaboration. Honda, led by Executive Vice President Noriya Kaihara, highlighted its existing Narsapura plant in Karnataka, which produces over 2.4 million two-wheelers annually and serves as the company’s largest manufacturing unit in India. The company announced plans to set up its first electric two-wheeler production base in Bengaluru, backed by an investment of Rs 600 crore. This move follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed during the Global Investors Meet, with operations set to begin shortly. The delegation encouraged Honda to explore investments beyond the two-wheeler segment, with the state government pledging full support.
Mitsubishi Electric reviewed its current operations in Karnataka, which span computerized numerical controllers, elevators, UPS systems, and chillers. The discussions centered on expanding its presence, with the state offering support to strengthen the capital equipment ecosystem.
Yokogawa Electric expressed interest in exploring expansion opportunities within the state. Restar also plans to enter the Indian market through a joint venture with a local partner for distribution operations.
The visit underscores Karnataka’s ambition to attract high-value Japanese investments in semiconductors, electric vehicles, electronics, and smart manufacturing. The state aims to position itself as a key player in India’s electronics manufacturing landscape, building on the commitments from Tokyo Electron, Honda, Mitsubishi Electric, Yokogawa Electric, and Restar to strengthen their presence in the region.
