A 1970s India Based Power Semiconductor Company Leading now in Some of the Local Markets
Hind Rectifiers Ltd. (Hirect), established in 1958 in collaboration with Westinghouse Brake & Signal Co., U.K., specializes in the design, development, manufacturing, and marketing of power electronic equipment and railway transportation equipment. Initially incorporated as Hind Rectifiers Private Limited, the company began its manufacturing operations in a Bombay Port Trust godown at Sassoon Dock, Colaba. In 1959-60, Hirect relocated to its current 20,000-square-meter campus in Bhandup, Mumbai.
In 1966, Hirect imported a plant from Westinghouse Brake & Signal Co. Ltd., U.K., to manufacture power silicon diodes. By the early 1970s, the company expanded into producing battery chargers, high-voltage, and high-current rectifiers for railway applications. In 1995, Supreme Powertronics Pvt. Ltd., Nashik, a sister concern operational since the mid-1980s, merged with Hirect.
In 2001, Hirect established new manufacturing facilities in Bhandup, Mumbai, to produce 25 KVA inverters to 180 KVA converters for Indian Railways. Marking its Golden Jubilee in April 2007, Hirect inaugurated two additional plants in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on April 13, 2007, to manufacture power equipment for railways.
