BrainChip Symphony Community Akida Bundle launched for IBM workload management

BrainChip has released the Symphony Community Akida Bundle, a free, open-source software package that lets developers run BrainChip's Akida neuromorphic processors, chips designed to mimic aspects of how the brain processes information, alongside their existing computing hardware, using a workload scheduler built on IBM Spectrum Symphony Community Edition. The bundle is available now on GitHub.

IBM Spectrum Symphony Community Edition is a workload management tool already used by many enterprises to automatically route computing tasks to whichever processor, whether CPU, GPU, or another accelerator, is best suited to handle them. By adding Akida into that same scheduling pool, lightweight, event-driven inference tasks (meaning AI tasks that only trigger processing when relevant data actually occurs, rather than continuously) can now be routed to Akida instead of automatically defaulting to a GPU. This effectively unifies CPU, GPU, and neuromorphic computing resources into a single heterogeneous system, without sacrificing performance or accuracy.

Steve Brightfield, chief product officer at BrainChip, said enterprises often burn through GPU computing cycles running both large and small inference jobs simply because their systems haven't had a real alternative. He said small inference jobs can now be scheduled on Akida instead, treating it as a first-class computing resource that offers lower latency and lower power consumption.

The move addresses a broader problem facing the AI industry: power consumption. As AI deployments scale up, companies increasingly have to answer difficult questions about power usage and cooling requirements. Neuromorphic computing is designed to address that problem directly rather than simply working around it, and analysts expect the category to grow accordingly, with Grand View Research estimating the neuromorphic computing market at $5.3 billion in 2023 and projecting it will reach $20.3 billion by 2030.

The Symphony Community Akida Bundle demonstrates that Akida can function as a genuine compute resource within production-grade workload orchestration software that many enterprises already rely on. For the broader neuromorphic computing market, this signals that the technology can meaningfully support many of the workloads already running in production today, a commercial step BrainChip describes as important for expanding where the technology gets adopted.

For BrainChip specifically, this extends its addressable market beyond edge devices into on-premises enterprise servers, a segment increasingly under pressure to cut both power consumption and costs. By placing Akida on equal footing with GPUs inside production-grade orchestration software, BrainChip frames this as strong validation that neuromorphic computing has a real place in mainstream enterprise infrastructure.
