Cystar, Incergo, and Visual Semiconductor have announced a collaboration to develop a 65-inch, 8K glasses-free 3D television for the home, using Visual Semiconductor's proprietary GF3D technology.
The companies are framing this as a fresh attempt to succeed where earlier 3D TVs failed. Past 3D television efforts struggled largely because they required viewers to wear special glasses; this device is designed to work without any glasses, headset, or eye-tracking technology at all. By combining GF3D technology with what's called plenoptic display technology, a display method that can render slightly different images depending on the viewer's position, the TV is designed to let everyone in a room see immersive 3D from their own seat simultaneously, without anyone needing to sit in a specific "sweet spot," and without anything to pair, charge, or hand around the room.
The companies envision a range of content working with the format, including films and TV shows in glasses-free 3D, streaming and on-demand libraries, live sports and events, concerts and performances, documentaries and nature programming, console and cloud gaming, glasses-free 3D video calls, and personal photos and home videos shown in 3D.
The announcement frames this as a new kind of reason to upgrade a living-room TV, arguing that for the first time in about a decade, the core value proposition isn't simply higher resolution, but a fundamentally different viewing experience that changes how a film feels rather than just how sharp it looks.
Expected features of the television include a 65-inch display at 8K Ultra HD resolution, GF3D glasses-free 3D technology, advanced plenoptic display technology, AI-enhanced image processing, support for whole-family glasses-free viewing, and no reliance on privacy-sensitive eye-tracking.
