Tachyum has announced that its Prodigy platform is now open source, letting developers, partners, and customers around the world adopt, build on, port, optimize, and test software for it.
The company frames this move in similar terms to how open-source Linux reshaped computing by breaking the hold of expensive proprietary systems, arguing that AI is heading in a similar direction, pointing to open-source models like China's Kimi K3 delivering strong performance at a fraction of typical cost. By open-sourcing Prodigy's Instruction Set Architecture (ISA), the fundamental set of commands a processor understands, Tachyum says it wants to eliminate today's dependence on costly proprietary hardware and make advanced AI more broadly accessible.
Tachyum argues that AI infrastructure shouldn't be controlled by just a handful of companies, drawing a comparison to how the steam engine couldn't have transformed the world if only one or two companies controlled it. By open-sourcing the complete Prodigy ISA along with its infrastructure, software stack, and development tools, the company says it's letting the broader developer community help mature the platform. This approach, developing hardware and software in parallel rather than software lagging behind hardware, is meant to ensure a fully functional, well-tested software ecosystem exists by the time actual Prodigy chips ship.
The Prodigy software ecosystem currently spans more than 70 separate software packages, ranging from low-level system utilities up to enterprise-grade applications. Through this open-source release, developers now get full visibility into several parts of Tachyum's software environment, including compiler technology and ISA implementation details, letting them inspect instruction-level optimizations and how the architecture executes code (including an RTL implementation of IEEE-standard floating-point operations) a software development kit and runtime environment for building and running applications; operating system support and drivers for integration; and AI software frameworks built to accelerate scalable AI and high-performance computing workloads. Tachyum also claims Prodigy runs software workloads up to five times more efficiently than competing platforms across the full stack.
Because the platform is now open, potential customers and partners can evaluate Prodigy, run simulations, and begin porting critical workloads immediately, without needing to wait until physical Prodigy hardware becomes generally available.
Dr. Radoslav Danilak, founder and CEO of Tachyum, said that as ARM shifts from licensing its chip designs to becoming a chip manufacturer itself, Tachyum is left as the last independent processor architecture. He said that independence matters for the technological sovereignty of many countries, and that as AI becomes increasingly foundational to technology broadly, its underlying infrastructure should benefit everyone rather than being controlled by a single company.
This software ecosystem launch fulfills a commitment Tachyum made in November 2025, when it first announced plans to open source its 281 GB/s TDIMM memory technology and promised to eventually open its ISA and broader software suite as well. The ISA specification manual itself is released under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. The move also builds on earlier steps Tachyum has taken toward openness, including making its TAI TPU technology available for enterprise licensing.
