India ESDM news update
The Indian Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) continues to grow but hardly matching to its full potential. The share of Indian semiconductor market is in single digit approximately around 6-8%, far less compared to the 10s of billions of $s worth of electronics sold here. The India semiconductor market continue to grow faster than the world average. The India semiconductor market is estimated to be grown roughly around 10% or more in 2016. Mobile phones, Set Top Boxes, IoT and Automotives are the hot areas in India.
The Make in India initiative is attracting every leading mobile phone vendor including Apple to get its phones manufactured from a mobile phone assembly factory in India. Apple expected to get its iPhone manufactured in Bangalore from its EMS partner based out of Taiwan, who to set up a manufacturing plant in India. 40 new mobile manufacturing units have been set up in India. 12 mobile components and accessories units were also established.
To buy small quantity of electronic components in India not only big distributors, even the online B2C companies such as Flipkart and Amazon now sell electronics components, test tools and test-boards particularly for hobbyists and makers at a price cheaper than the leading component-selling online shops such as Mouser Electronics and RS Components.
In semiconductor packaging, there are some Indian companies enhancing their capabilities. Mysore, Karnataka based Kaynes now has the capability to mount Package on Package (POP) in its SMT line.
From the leading EMS company Foxconn to many such EMS companies are establishing manufacturing plants in India.
Robert Bosch has opened a new reliability testing laboratory in Bengaluru for testing electronics components. The services of the laboratory is open for external organisations who want their electronics components tested for reliability. The lab built at a cost of 3.5 million US$ has climatic test chamber.
