At Aerospace Tech Week, Wind River,  announced that Leonardo, a prominent player in the aerospace, defense, and security sector, has chosen the VxWorks RTOS to drive software-defined advancements in its cutting-edge safety-related radio frequency system on multicore processor architectures.
To address the complexities of utilizing different multicore processor architectures for various system functions within the Leonardo RF system, VxWorks will provide a unified application runtime environment across these architectures. Leonardo is developing applications to run on VxWorks and will undergo DO-178C DAL C certification.
DO-178C is a standard for software considerations in airborne systems and equipment certification. It is used by certification authorities like the FAA, EASA, and Transport Canada to approve commercial software-based aerospace systems

“As multicore processors propel us into an increasingly software-defined world, new opportunities arise to advance aerospace and defense systems,” said Jay Bellissimo, President of Wind River. “VxWorks delivers unmatched deterministic high performance, setting the standard for a scalable, safe, secure, and reliable operating environment for mission-critical computing. Together with Leonardo, we can help companies navigate a shifting technology landscape—extending the performance and lifespan of their systems while reducing program and certification risk.”
Wind River technology simplifies and reduces the cost of meeting stringent safety certification standards such as EN 50128, IEC 61508, ISO 26262, and DO-178C / ED-12C.

As the first and only commercial RTOS to support Open Container Initiative –compliant containers, VxWorks' OCI container implementation uses a lightweight minimal footprint combined with VxWorks Real-Time Processes . This enables the development of containerized applications on VxWorks, allowing Leonardo to rapidly deploy new software-defined capabilities.
