ROHM has developed its SDR01 Series of high anti-surge chip resistors, achieving what the company describes as a class-leading rated power of 0.33W in the compact 0402 (1005 metric) package size. Designed for electronic equipment where component density on the circuit board keeps increasing, the series is well suited for automotive, industrial, consumer electronics, and AI server applications. The new resistors help save board space and reduce component count by letting designers replace larger resistors or consolidate multiple resistors into fewer components, while still maintaining the reliability expected of anti-surge products.
As electronic equipment becomes more capable and requires more power, demand is rising across automotive, industrial, and consumer markets for components that combine small size with strong power handling. This trend is also increasing the need for smaller, high-reliability chip resistors, including anti-surge types, which are components specifically designed to withstand sudden voltage spikes. In power supply circuits and around device interfaces, resistors need to withstand both electrical surges and electrostatic discharge (ESD), while also handling higher power levels.
To meet these demands, ROHM optimized the resistive element and electrode design of the SDR01 Series, allowing it to guarantee high rated power in the small 0402 package while still maintaining the reliability standards expected of high anti-surge chip resistors.
The new resistors guarantee 0.33W of rated power up to a terminal temperature of 125°C, making them easier to use in demanding thermal environments, such as densely packed circuit boards or areas near heat-generating components, and helping reduce the overall burden of thermal design.
The resistors also achieve a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of ±100 ppm/°C across a resistance range of 10Ω to 2.2MΩ. By minimizing how much the resistance value shifts with temperature changes, this helps support stable circuit operation and contributes to smaller, more reliable power supply circuits and peripheral interface circuits.
Mass production of the new SDR01 Series has already begun, with a sample price of $0.04 per unit before tax. The products are also available for purchase online through the ROHM Online Store as well as distributors including DigiKey and Farnell.
ROHM says it will continue expanding its lineup of high-reliability chip resistors, aiming to support further miniaturization, higher power handling, and improved reliability in electronic equipment.
