Montage Technology Begins Trial Production of Industry-First CXL 3.2 Memory Expander Chip

Montage Technology has begun trial production of its CXL 3.2 Memory eXpander Controller (MXC) chip, which the company describes as an industry first. The chip is designed to address rising demand for memory expansion and resource pooling in AI, cloud computing, and data center environments. Built on CXL technology, a standard that lets memory be shared flexibly across different processors and devices, the MXC chip lets customers build memory systems with more capacity, better resource utilization, and greater flexibility than traditional server memory allows.
 
The chip complies with CXL Type 3 specifications, supporting both the CXL.mem and CXL.io protocols, which govern how memory requests and general data traffic are handled over a CXL connection. It also supports PCIe 6.x and the CXL 3.2 protocol, delivering data transfer rates of up to 64 GT/s (gigatransfers per second, a measure of how fast data moves across the interface). The chip integrates two DDR5 memory controllers supporting speeds up to 8000 MT/s. By converting memory requests coming from the host system into DDR memory commands in real time, it enables efficient data exchange between the host and the backend memory it's managing, effectively letting servers work around the memory capacity limits they otherwise be stuck with.
