Samsung Completes Industry-First Commercial vRAN Call on Intel Xeon 6 SoC with Tier 1 U.S. Operator
Samsung Electronics announced the successful completion of the industry’s first commercial call using its virtualized RAN (vRAN) solution powered by the Intel Xeon 6700P-B processor series, featuring up to 72 cores, on a Tier 1 U.S. operator’s live network.
This achievement follows Samsung’s 2024 lab-based industry-first end-to-end call using the Intel Xeon 6 SoC. The commercial deployment utilized a single commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) server from Hewlett Packard Enterprise running a cloud platform from Wind River.
The vRAN deployment on the latest Intel Xeon 6 SoC, available commercially only months prior, supports single-server configurations for next-generation networks. It enables operators to consolidate multiple software-driven network functions—including mobile core, radio access, transport, and security—onto fewer, more powerful servers.
This consolidation approach reduces network power consumption, capital expenditure (CAPEX), and operational expenditure (OPEX). It also supports the adoption of AI-RAN and AI services while enhancing flexibility and automation for 6G readiness.
The solution leverages Intel Xeon 6 SoC capabilities, including Intel Advanced Matrix Extensions (Intel AMX), Intel vRAN Boost, higher cor...
