Semtech’s LoRaWAN technology supports Yorkshire water’s smart meter deployment

Semtech Corporation announced the use of its LoRa technology in a smart water metering project by Yorkshire Water, in collaboration with Netmore Group, across the U.K. The initiative, one of the largest of its kind in the region, involves deploying 1.3 million smart water meters over five years.

The project utilizes LoRaWAN technology to enable real-time data collection. Yorkshire Water reports that the initial rollout has identified over 1,000 customer-side leaks, saving 1.22 megaliters of water daily. Full deployment is expected to reduce leakage by 8 megaliters per day, lower household water consumption by 2 liters per person daily, and decrease non-household water demand by 15% by 2050. The smart meters have batteries lasting up to 15 years, reducing maintenance costs.
The network architecture includes high tower sites, monopoles, mid-layer gateways, and indoor solutions, achieving 90% dual gateway connectivity. This setup supports millions of daily meter readings processed through Netmore’s platform for leak detection and consumption analysis. Rémi Demerlé, director of LoRa ecosystem development at Semtech, stated that the solution addresses water conservation and management challenges. Vadim Lyu, managing director UK at Netmore Group, noted that the netwo...
