SDG&E, Qualcomm, and UC San Diego Deploy Edge AI System for Real-Time Wildfire and Extreme Weather Detection
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), Qualcomm Technologies, and UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography have jointly launched Edge Alert Sentinel (EAS) an AI-powered environmental monitoring system that processes wildfire and extreme weather data directly at the point of risk, rather than sending it to distant cloud servers for analysis. The first deployment is on Mt. Palomar, a high-elevation site critical for wildfire monitoring in Southern California.
Traditional environmental monitoring systems rely on cloud-based processing. Data is collected at a sensor, transmitted to a remote data center, analyzed, and results sent back. Under normal conditions, this round-trip delay is manageable. But during a wildfire or severe weather event when connectivity is often d...
