Samsung Pitches 4nm FinFET Foundry Process as Ideal “Sweet Spot” Between Mature and Cutting-Edge Nodes

Samsung Foundry is actively promoting its 4nm process technology as a practical midway solution for chip designers who want advanced performance without the extreme costs and risks of the latest 2nm nodes.

In a new blog post on its semiconductor website, Samsung highlights the 4nm FinFET process as a well-balanced option positioned at the boundary between mature and leading-edge technologies. The company emphasizes that the node delivers high yield rates and is more cost-effective than 2nm processes, while still offering the benefits of advanced manufacturing.

Key advantages outlined in the post include:

High yield rates and lower costs : Thanks to more than six years of mass-production experience, the 4nm process has achieved strong reliability and predictability, making it cheaper and more stable than next-generation 2nm nodes.
Process stability and predictability : Accumulated production knowledge has reduced process variation and made defect patterns more predictable, allowing earlier risk mitigation and more consistent manufacturing outcomes.
Multiple design options and flexibility : Designers gain access to a wide range of threshold voltage (Vth) choices, relaxed analog design rules, and co-optimized transistors and interconnects, enabling fine-tuning of performance, power, and area metrics to suit specific need...
