AMD and OpenAI Forge Multi-Year Partnership to Deploy 6 Gigawatts of AI-Powered GPUs
AMD and OpenAI announced a multi-year, multi-generation agreement to deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs to power OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure. The partnership begins with a 1 gigawatt deployment of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, scheduled for the second half of 2026.
The agreement positions AMD as a core strategic compute partner for OpenAI, focusing on large-scale deployments of AMD’s rack-scale AI solutions, starting with the MI450 series and extending to future generations. The collaboration builds on prior work with the MI300X and MI350X series, involving shared technical expertise to optimize hardware and software roadmaps.
As part of the deal, AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, vesting in tranches tied to milestones. The first tranche vests with the initial 1 gigawatt deployment, with additional vesting linked to scaling up to 6 gigawatts, AMD share-price targets, and OpenAI’s technical and commercial milestones.
Dr. Lisa Su, AMD chair and CEO, stated that the partnership combines AMD and OpenAI’s capabilities to enable large-scale AI deployments. Sam Altman, OpenAI co-founder and CEO, noted that AMD’s high-performance chips will support OpenAI’s efforts to expand AI compute capacity. Greg Brockman, OpenAI co-founder and president, emphasized the importa...
