Eaton Unveils Edge-Based AI Power Burst Detection Solution for Data Centers at Yotta 2025

Eaton announced a firmware update for its Power Xpert quality (PXQ) event analysis system, enabling detection of subsynchronous oscillations (SSO) caused by AI power bursts in data centers. The solution, designed to address large fluctuations in energy demand from GPU servers powering AI workloads, helps operators identify and mitigate SSO to prevent damage to data center infrastructure and the grid, such as transformer overheating and ferroresonant damage.

The PXQ meter, used in switchgear, switchboards, and power distribution units, integrates edge analytics to monitor power quality events like sags, swells, transients, and harmonics. The firmware upgrade allows it to detect SSO, enabling preventive actions to enhance infrastructure resiliency. This aligns with Eaton’s grid-to-chip strategy, which employs intelligent power distribution, backup power solutions, and digital tools to optimize AI data center operations.

The solution supports Eaton’s collaborations with NVIDIA for 800 VDC power infrastructure for 1-megawatt racks and with Siemens Energy for integrated onsite power in ...
