Micro LED Market to Hit US$461M by 2029 as Smartwatches and Automotive Displays Fuel Adoption

TrendForce reported that the Micro LED chip market is projected to reach US$461 million by 2029, driven by its growing adoption in consumer electronics and automotive applications. The technology’s penetration is accelerating with milestone products like Samsung’s 140-inch Micro LED TV launched in 2023, Garmin’s upcoming Fenix 8 Pro smartwatch with a 1.39-inch Micro LED display set for 2025, and Sony Honda’s 30-inch automotive display for the Afeela model, also slated for 2025.

Despite its potential, Micro LED faces challenges with high power consumption and costs, limiting its short-term competitiveness against OLED technology. However, its advantages, including extreme brightness and sensor integration potential, make it suitable for outdoor sports watches like the Fenix 8 Pro. AUO leads the supply chain for Garmin’s smartwatch, utilizing PlayNitride’s Micro LED chips (approximately 15 x 30 μm) and Raydium’s driver ICs, with AUO’s image calibration technology enhancing the display.
