India’s Semiconductor Rise: PM Modi Unveils Ambitious Vision at Semicon India 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Semicon India 2025 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, outlining India’s strategic push to become a global semiconductor hub. Addressing an audience of industry leaders, international delegates from over 40 countries, and young innovators, Modi highlighted the government’s efforts to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem, emphasizing its critical role in the 21st-century global economy.
PM Modi noted that the global semiconductor market, currently valued at $600 billion, is projected to exceed $1 trillion in the coming years. He expressed confidence that India’s rapid advancements will secure a significant share of this market. The Prime Minister detailed the approval of ten semiconductor projects worth over ₹1.5 lakh crore ($18 billion), initiated since the Semicon India programme launched in 2021. Key milestones include the approval of India’s first semiconductor plant in 2023, additional plants in 2024, and five more projects cleared in 2025. Notably, CG Power’s pilot plant began operations on August 28, 2025, with Kaynes’ pilot plant nearing completion. Test chips from Micron and Tata are in production, with commercial chip manufacturing set to commence this year.
