MIPI Alliance Unveils I3C Basic v1.2: Streamlined Interface for Mobile, IoT, and Data Center Connectivity
The MIPI Alliance has released MIPI I3C Basic v1.2, a utility and control bus interface designed to connect peripherals to microcontrollers or application processors. This version reorganizes the specification into mandatory and optional feature sections, allowing implementation based on specific application requirements.
MIPI I3C Basic, a royalty-free subset of the member-version MIPI I3C, builds on the legacy I2C, SPI, and UART interfaces. Introduced in 2016 and updated to v1.1 in 2019, it offers improved performance and power efficiency. The interface uses a two-wire setup with in-band interrupts, reducing pin count and signal paths. It supports a typical data rate of 11.1 Mbps, with high-data-rate modes reaching up to 100 Mbps.

Key applications include connecting peripherals in mobile and embedded devices, system debugging, and serving as a control sideband bus for DDR5 DRAM, SSD control, and MIPI Camera Control Interface (CCI). The interface has been adopted by PCI-SIG and NVM Express for system management, by JEDEC for its sideband bus and DDR5 standard, and by ...
