Syncing of Semiconductor Manufacturing and Design: Funding and Talent Development Schemes

India is speeding up semiconductor industry growth by enabling comprehensive chip ecosystem, leveraging its significant talent pool, which constitutes nearly 20% of the world’s chip design engineers. The government is focusing on enhancing domestic capabilities, creating high-value jobs, and positioning India as a trusted global partner in semiconductor technology.

Leading semiconductor companies have established design and research centers in India, expanding their workforce to develop advanced chips. To support talent development, the government has introduced several initiatives:

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has implemented a new curriculum for VLSI Design & Technology and Integrated Circuit (IC) manufacturing.
Programs aim to develop 85,000 skilled professionals in semiconductor design, with over 45,000 students from 100 institutions enrolled and access provided to Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools.
The Skilled Manpower Advanced Research and Training (SMART) Lab at NIELIT Calicut is training 100,000 engineers nationwide, with 44,000 already trained.
Collaborations with industry leaders such as Lam Research, IBM, and Purdue University are supporting skill development.

Under the Semicon India programme, the government has allocated Rs 76,000 crore to catalyze semiconductor and display manufacturing. Th...
