IEEE Recognizes Biswanath Mukherjee with 2026 Eric E. Sumner Award for Optical Network Innovations

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) named Biswanath Mukherjee, Distinguished Professor emeritus of computer science at the University of California, Davis, as the recipient of the 2026 Eric E. Sumner Award. The award, sponsored by Nokia Bell Labs, honors outstanding contributions to communications technology and is named after Eric E. Sumner, who pioneered the first commercial pulse-code modulation system, marking the dawn of the digital era.

Mukherjee was recognized for his foundational work in optical networks and systems, particularly in lightwave networks utilizing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology. His research focuses on developing innovative architectures, protocols, and algorithms for high-speed networks. Additionally, Mukherjee has contributed to network intrusion detection for real-time identification of software vulnerabilities and attacks, as well as advancements in wireless and sensor networks. He is the founder and president of Ennetix, a company specializing in application-centric network analytics.

Mukherjee joined IEEE in 1982 as a student member and became a life member, earning IEEE Fellow status in 2006. In 2015, he received the IEEE Communications Society’s inaugural Outstanding Technical Achievement Award for his influence on optical networking. His academic career includes over 900 published pape...
