Europe’s Semiconductor Industry: Strategic Collaboration Key to Global AI Competitiveness
Merck hosted a summit of semiconductor industry leaders in Darmstadt to discuss the critical role of Germany and Europe in the global semiconductor ecosystem, with a focus on advancing artificial intelligence (AI). Representatives from Merck, Siemens, Intel, TRUMPF, and ZEISS highlighted Europe’s technological contributions in materials, lasers, optics, chip design software, and smart manufacturing, which are essential for producing advanced semiconductors, particularly for AI applications.

Europe’s strengths in research and development form a foundation for its competitiveness, but closer collaboration across the value chain and supportive political measures are needed to strengthen the region’s position. Kai Beckmann, CEO Electronics at Merck, emphasized the need for industry and political stakeholders to align efforts to influence the global semiconductor and AI markets, noting that Europe’s role is often underestimated.
The summit underscored the importance of a holistic approach to the semiconductor value chain, including chip design, equipment, and material development. Cedrik Neike of Siemens AG highlighted the role of semiconductors as the interface between physical and digital realms, with Siemens supporting customers from ...
