Global Smartphone Shipments Dip 1% in Q2 2025 Amid Economic Uncertainty and Shifting Consumer Trends

Global smartphone shipments fell 1% year-on-year in Q2 2025, marking the first decline in six quarters, according to research from Canalys, now part of Omdia. The drop reflects stable vendor performances despite subdued consumer sentiment and increasing global macroeconomic volatility. Samsung maintained its top position with a 19% market share, driven by its Galaxy A series. Apple secured second place with a 16% share, followed by Xiaomi at 15%. TRANSSION and OPPO each held a 9% share, rounding out the top five vendors.

The market slowdown stems from a fading replacement cycle for devices purchased during the pandemic and persistent weak consumer demand. Most vendors adjusted production targets to avoid excess inventory, except in the US, where uncertainties around tariff policies under the Trump administration prompted Apple, Samsung, and Motorola (Lenovo) to maintain high inventory levels and frontload devices. These strategies aim to navigate complex geopolitical and regulatory challenges.
