GlobalFoundries to Acquire MIPS to Enhance AI and Compute Portfolio

GlobalFoundries has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MIPS, a supplier of AI and processor IP. The acquisition will integrate MIPS’ customizable RISC-V processor IP and software tools into GlobalFoundries’ portfolio, targeting applications in autonomous mobility, industrial automation, datacenters, and intelligent edge devices.

MIPS’ recent offerings include the Atlas portfolio, featuring compute cores for real-time and application processing, as well as specialized AI edge processing cores. The portfolio also includes Atlas Explorer, a virtual platform for optimizing performance, power, and area during the design phase.

Niels Anderskouv, president and chief operating officer at GlobalFoundries, stated that the acquisition aligns with the demand for AI platforms across various markets. The integration of MIPS’ IP with GlobalFoundries’ process technologies and manufacturing capabilities aims to provide customers with flexible solutions for automotive, industrial, and datacenter applications.

Sameer Wasson, CEO of MIPS, noted that joining GlobalFoundries will support MIPS’ ability to scale its solutions and address opportunities in physical AI applications. Post-acquisition, MIPS will operate as a standalone business within GlobalFoundries, continuing to serve its customers across multiple technologies.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close in the second half of 2025.
