GlobalFoundries to invest $16 billion in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing expansion

GlobalFoundries announced a $16 billion investment to expand its semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging capabilities in New York and Vermont. The initiative, supported by the Trump Administration and technology companies including Apple, SpaceX, AMD, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., NXP, and GM, aims to bring semiconductor production back to the U.S. and diversify global supply chains. The investment addresses the increasing demand for power-efficient, high-bandwidth semiconductors driven by artificial intelligence growth in datacenters, communications infrastructure, and AI-enabled devices.
The $16 billion plan includes over $13 billion to expand and modernize facilities in New York and Vermont, as well as funding for the New York Advanced Packaging and Photonics Center, a U.S.-based facility focused on silicon photonics packaging. An additional $3 billion will support research and development in packaging innovation, silicon photonics, and next-generation gallium nitride (GaN) technologies. These efforts target applications in AI, aerospace, automotive, and high-performance communications.
GlobalFoundries’ 22FDX platform, silicon photonics, and GaN-based power solutions are designed to meet requirements for power efficiency and performance, particularly for AI applications in datacenters and edge devices. The company’s partnerships with Apple, Spa...
