EU AI processor chip startup SiPearl and it's Rhea1 Processors are competing with whom?

In an era where technological sovereignty and high-performance computing (HPC) are critical to global competitiveness, SiPearl, a French semiconductor company is trying to lead in Europe, to fulfill the continent self sufficiency needs in advanced AI processor market. Founded in June 2019 by Philippe Notton, SiPearl is designing and delivering the Rhea1 processor, a high-performance, energy-efficient chip born out of the European Processor Initiative (EPI), with sample to be available in year 2025.

SiPearl’s creation is deeply tied to the European Union’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on non-EU technology, particularly from the United States and China. This fabless semiconductor startup partnering with TSMC for foundry services. SiPearl headquartered in Maisons-Laffitte, France with around few 100 employees working closely with a consortium of 30 partners from the EPI, including academic institutions, supercomputing centers, and industry leaders like Atos and NVIDIA.

SiPearl with around €100 million in funding, including €90 million from a Series A round in 2023 and additional grants from the EU and French government, SiPearl is developing chips with capability to power exascale supercomputers—systems that can perform a quintillion calculations per second—and with an emphasis on energy efficiency.
