EdgeCortix and Renesas collaborate to accelerate AI/ML development

Date: 13/10/2023
Renesas Electronics strategically partners with EdgeCortix to accelerate AI/ML development. EdgeCortix is into edge AI advancements by having software-first approach in developing edge computing systems mainly at chip level. Renesas also said it has also invested in EdgeCortix's latest funding round, where it will have access to EdgeCortix's cutting-edge technology.

EdgeCortix offering suite of proprietary software and AI chip products accelerates AI inference tasks at very low power with low latency. They have three products on the market: MERA, a multiple hardware platform compatible compiler software framework; Dynamic Neural Accelerator (DNA), a scalable, run-time reconfigurable neural network processor intellectual property (IP); and the power-efficient SAKURA AI co-processor device. These products form an integrated solution, especially suited for real-time edge AI. EdgeCortix’s solutions can deliver better energy efficiency and better performance compared to conventional GPUs and CPUs.

Renesas has established itself as a (frontrunner) in the field of edge and endpoint artificial intelligence (AI), boasting an extensive range of embedded computing solutions. This is further enhanced by the inclusion of Reality AI Software, as well as a wide array of internal and partner solutions for AI implementation in various sectors such as industrial, smart home, automotive, and more. By working with EdgeCortix, Renesas aims to optimize and consolidate its overall AI/ML (Machine Learning) developer experience across its complete portfolio of microcontroller units (MCU) and microprocessor units (MPU). This partnership will also facilitate the creation of a seamless backend layer for compilation, supporting diverse architectures.

“Renesas saw the potential for AI/ML at the edge and endpoint very early on, and we have moved swiftly to solidify our position in this fast-growing segment,” said Sailesh Chittipeddi, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Renesas’ Embedded Processing, Digital Power and Signal Chain Solutions Group. “The combination of our embedded processors and Reality AI Software along with EdgeCortix solutions will enable our customers to seamlessly compile their AI code with support for heterogeneous architectures, reducing their development risk, time and cost.”

By collaborating with EdgeCortix, Renesas can make use of its current intellectual property and hardware. At the same time, Renesas can benefit from EdgeCortix's knowledge in important technology fields such as Apache TVM1, compiler development, and heterogeneous framework design. This partnership also allows Renesas to gain access to EdgeCortix's specialized hardware expertise, which includes Arm and various other architectures, including Renesas' DRP-AI accelerator.

“We are delighted to grow and enhance our current strategic collaboration with an industry leader that also shares our vision and enthusiasm for the vast potential of supporting energy efficient AI/ML applications at the edge,” said Sakyasingha Dasgupta, Founder and CEO of EdgeCortix. “We are confident that both companies will benefit from this relationship, however the real winners will be our collective customers.”
