Apple Unveils A20 Pro Chip at Surprise and Shine Event for iPhone 18 Pro

Apple held its September 9, 2026 “Surprise and Shine” event and introduced the A20 Pro chipset alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The A20 Pro powers the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models. 

The A20 Pro uses 2nm process technology. It features a 6-core CPU design consisting of two new super cores that are up to 20% faster and four efficiency cores. The cores are described as desktop-class and the fastest in any smartphone.

The A20 Pro is a pair of 64-bit ARM-based systems on a chip designed by Apple as part of the Apple silicon series. It is used in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra. Both chips are manufactured by TSMC using the N3P variant of their 2 nm process node. The chips were announced on September 9, 2026, and are the successors to the Apple A19 Pro processors. The chip is expected to be the first Apple smartphone processor made on TSMC’s 2nm process.

TSMC’s N2 process uses a nanosheet transistor architecture and is designed to deliver improvements in performance, power efficiency and transistor density. TSMC has said its 2nm technology is intended to provide full-node performance and power benefits over its previous generation.
