Can robot competitions become more interesting than human sports?
At Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, the “Ice Ribbon” held on 22nd August 2026, humanoid robots are rewriting the rulebook for athletic spectacle. The second World Humanoid Robot Games (August 22–26) has drawn 666 teams and 2,056 robots from 16 countries across six continents, a sharp jump from the 2025 inaugural edition’s roughly 280 teams and over 500 machines. The five-day event features 51 competitions (30 sports-style events and 21 scenario-based contests) and 1,301 matches, up from 26 events and 487 matches the previous year.
The opening days delivered headline-grabbing performances that outpaced human world records. A Tiangong Ultra (Tien Kung Ultra) humanoid from Beijing-based X-Humanoid clocked 9.39 seconds in the 100-meter sprint, faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second mark. Trial runs and other entries pushed times as low as 9.32 seconds. The same model line completed 400 meters in roughly 38.15–39.7 seconds, beating Wayde van Niekerk’s human record of 43.03 seconds. In the standing high jump, a robot cleared about 2.88 meters—well above previous humanoid marks near 0.96 meters and exceeding classic human records in that format.
