Renesas to phase out production at Takasaki factory, expand R&D efforts

Renesas Electronics has decided to phase out manufacturing at its Takasaki Factory in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, operated by its manufacturing subsidiary Renesas Semiconductor Manufacturing. At the same time, the company plans to maintain and strengthen the research and development work currently based at that site, with the existing location and surrounding areas being considered as the primary option for where that R&D work will continue.
The decision reflects broader structural shifts happening across the semiconductor supply chain, particularly for older 6-inch wafer production lines, as suppliers increasingly discontinue the materials and equipment maintenance support these lines depend on. At Takasaki, which runs a 6-inch wafer line, continuing to manufacture certain products has become increasingly difficult, mainly due to aging equipment and utility infrastructure at the facility.
Given these constraints, Renesas has decided to gradually wind down and eventually end manufacturing at Takasaki. To maintain stable supply for its customers during that transition, the company says it will carefully assess demand and build up inventory accordingly. Production at the factory is expected to be discontinued within the next two to three years, with the facility's closure following after that.
