Elio Raises $21 Million to Build AI-Native Sensors That Decide What to Capture in Real Time
Elio, a startup building sensors designed specifically for AI rather than for human vision, has closed a $21 million funding round led by Innovation Endeavors and Xora, with additional participation from Kevin Weil and Scribble VC. UpWest and Resolute Ventures, which led the company's previous funding round, are also continuing to invest.
The core idea behind Elio is a rethink of how sensors work. Most sensors today, cameras included, capture a single, fixed view of the world that's essentially designed around what a human eye would want to see, then hand that fixed image off to be analyzed afterward. Elio's approach flips that: instead of capturing a predetermined picture, its sensors let an AI system decide what information to capture and how, adjusting in real time based on what it's actually trying to figure out, so it gets the specific data it needs rather than a generic snapshot to sort through later.
To make this possible, Elio moves some of the computation into the optics themselves. Rather than light simply passing through a lens onto a sensor, it passes through dynamic optical layers made of micromirrors that actively process the light before it's captured, functioning less like a traditional lens and more like a layer of a neural network.
