Mitsubishi Chemical Group Holds Talks for Semiconductor Unit in West Bengal

Japanese major Mitsubishi Chemical Group has initiated discussions with the West Bengal government regarding the establishment of a semiconductor unit in the state. Senior company representatives met state officials on Wednesday. 

Industries Minister Tapas Roy and Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta held a meeting with the Mitsubishi delegation, which included executives Teruo Fujita and Tomafumi Koyama. Roy stated that the company is eager to set up the unit and that another delegation is scheduled to visit in the fourth week of this month for further discussions.

The state government is considering Durgapur and Panagarh as potential locations, noting that the proposed semiconductor project would require relatively limited land. Roy said attracting semiconductor investments is a priority, referencing the state’s budget announcement to establish a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Durgapur.

Mitsubishi is into multiple segments of semiconductor manufacturing including semiconductor devices(mainly power discrete devices) as well as chemicals. Mitsubishi Chemical Group, with annual revenue of 3,704 billion yen in FY25 (more than $22 billion), operates in advanced materials, speciality chemicals, and industrial solutions. It supplies critical process materials and consumables used in wafer manufacturing.
